Presentation
The focus of the PROMESS project (2022-2025) is the immersive multisensory restitution of scenes from the past, in the context of preservation, dissemination, and promotion of cultural heritage. Its field of application is the Château de Guédelon, an experimental construction site where dozens of workers are building a fortified castle using medieval techniques and materials. The preservation of the craftsmanship and archeological knowledge created on this site, which began over 20 years ago, is of paramount importance to the society.
The objective of the research project is to create new technologies and algorithms for (1) on-site capture of audio, visual, and olfactive stimuli, and (2) their immersive multisensory restitution. The project focus on both tangible (physical environment) and intangible (artisanal gestures) cultural heritage and aims to produce what we may call multisensory digital twins. Such virtual multisensory replicas open the way to reproducing true sensitive experiences, useful not only for museography and cultural heritage promotion but also for future craftsmen training.
The PROMESS project is funded by Région Auvergne Rhône-Alpes (200K euros). Complementary fundings have been provided by CNRS through the MENECHME project (MITI call), and by the the Château de Guédelon.
The team
